The weather is pretty and all slept well aboard the Zealandia. Company C has the worst quarters on the boat, way down below (bunk hole) where the air is not good. We are very crowded, three bunks being fixed on top of each other. But we have good, clean mattresses and wire springs and a life preserver. At 2 p.m. we raised anchor and at 2:40 we passed through the Golden Gate. Every whistle in the city sounded the alarm of our departure and the people rushed to the shore to see the last glimmwer of our vessels. Our rigging was full of the boys and no doubt presented a beautiful picture. As soon as we were out of the bay, order was restored but everybody was hungry. We didn't receive supper that night which caused, of course, a great deal of [dis]satisfaction. The sea is very calm before passing through the Golden Gate. Most of us send our last mail ashore in a small yacht.
